Internet Security Myths and How to Stay Safer Online

Most everyone who goes online falls into one of these categories that define what they think about internet security: Both groups have something in common—they don’t know there’s something they can do to get more security online. Wifi network security is the answer. The colorful infographic below profiles Internet users (everyday people like you) who took action to be more safe and secure when they’re online. What did they do? They started using a VPN…a virtual private network. At the heart of that is a question that you always need to keep in mind: Are you on a secure network? If you are in a hotel, an airport or a coffee shop, the answer is NO. That’s because anyone at all can use that network—it’s open to the public. That’s why free public Wi-Fi networks could be problematic. They are not secured networks. Kapersky, the global cybersecurity company, says this on their website about free Wi-Fi. “The biggest threat to free Wi-Fi security is the ability for the hacker to position himself between you and the connection point. So instead of talking directly with the hotspot, you’re sending your information to the hacker, who then relays it on.” A crafty hacker could break into the network and monitor traffic as it travels across the network. According to Kapersky, working in this setup, you’re in danger. “The hacker has access to every piece of information you’re sending out on the Internet.” They go on to so say, “important emails, credit card information and even security credentials to your business network. Once the hacker has that information, he can—at his leisure—access your systems as if he were you.” Maybe you’ve heard about VPNs before, but haven’t gotten around to using one for yourself or even bothering to know what it is. It’s time you did. Online security is probably the number one reason most VPN users signed up for a Virtual Private Network. The “persona” images in this infographic above are entertaining sure. But they also do a good job of highlighting the important reasons security-minded people choose to use a VPN. Those reasons should be important to you to, especially for those specific instances when you need to have a virtually, hack-proof and extra-secure Internet connection.
